1             Plus qu’une sorte d’amour

Dans No et Moi, Delphine de Vigan explore plusieurs sortes d’amour : l’amour entre les membres d’une famille, l’attirance affective et sexuelle entre deux adolescents et le principe d’aimer son prochain.

More than one kind of love

In No et Moi, Delphine de Vigan explores several types of love: love between members of a family, romantic love between two teenagers and the principle of loving your neighbour.

2             L’amour maternel

Au début du livre, les trois personnages principaux du livre, Lou, No et Lucas souffrent d’un manque d’amour maternel. La mère de Lou a fait une grave dépression suite à la mort de sa petite fille, Thaïs. Par conséquent, elle est froide et distante envers Lou : « plus jamais elle ne me serre contre elle » [P55]. No a été conçue lors d’un viol et sa mère l’a rejetée complètement. Le père de Lucas est parti au Brésil, sa mère vit avec son copain à Neuilly [P128] et Lucas se débrouille tout seul dans l’appartement de sa mère.

À la fin du récit, Lou fait une fugue avec No et quand elle revient chez elle sa mère la serre dans ses bras pour la première fois depuis des années. On apprend aussi que Lucas va habiter chez sa mère et qu’elle va vendre l’appartement. Cependant, il n’y a pas de fin heureuse pour No. Accompagnée par Lou, elle décide d’aller voir sa mère à Ivry mais sa mère refuse de lui ouvrir la porte. Accablée, No se laisse glisser par terre et son corps tremble [P168]. C’est suite à cet incident que sa vie dégénère complètement.

Maternal Love

At the start of the book, the three main characters in the book, Lou, No and Lucas suffer from a lack of maternal affection. Lou’s mother is severely depressed following the death of her baby daughter, Thaïs. Consequently, she is cold and detached towards Lou: “she never hugs me anymore”. No was conceived during a rape and her mother has rejected her completely. Lucas’ father has gone to Brazil, his mother lives with her boyfriend in Neuilly and Lucas is fending for himself in his mother’s apartment.

At the end of the book, Lou runs away with No and when she returns home, her mother hugs her for the first time in years. We also learn that Lucas is going to live with his mother and that she is going to sell the apartment. However, there is no happy ending for No. Accompanied by Lou, she decides to go and see her mother in Ivry but her mother refuses to open the door to her. Devastated, No slips to the floor trembling. It is following this incident that her life takes a turn for the worst.

3             L’amour paternel

Lou et son père semblent s’aimer. Il s’occupe bien de Lou et il encourage aussi son développement intellectuel. Il est prêt à passer du temps avec elle en l’aidant à trouver les réponses à toutes ses questions dans des livres ou sur internet [P95]. Lou a l’air d’aimer son père et le voit plutôt sous une lumière héroïque. Elle le compare à un détective à la télé qui doit élucider un crime et qui a, en même temps, une vie personnelle difficile : « il ne s’énerve jamais, il a une veste de cuir, une épouse malade dont il s’occupe très bien et une fille adolescente un peu pénible, bref, tous les ingrédients nécessaires pour qu’on s’attache à lui » [P95]. En revanche, No ne connaît pas son père et le père de Lucas est parti au Brésil.

Paternal love

There appears to be a loving bond between Lou and her father. He looks after and he encourages her intellectual development. He is prepared to spend time with her by helping her find answers to all her questions in books or on the internet. Lou seems to love her father and sees him in a somewhat heroic light. She compares him to a TV detective who has to solve a crime and at the same time, has a difficult personal life: “He never gets worked up, he has a leather jacket, a sick wife that he looks after very well and a bit of an irritating teenage daughter, in short, all the ingredients needed to make him endearing”. By contrast, No doesn’t know her father and Lucas’ father has gone to Brazil.

4             L’amour entre Anouk et Bernard

Pendant la dépression d’Anouk, Bernard la soutient : “Il a…une épouse malade dont il s’occupe très bien » [P95]. Quand Lou accuse Anouk de ne plus l’aimer, Bernard s’empresse de prendre la défense de sa femme : “elle t’aime de tout son cœur, elle ne sait plus très bien comment faire, pour le montrer » [P221]. La patience et l’esprit positif de Bernard sont récompensés parce qu’au cours de l’histoire, sa femme commence à aller mieux et la flamme semble raviver dans leur couple : “Le soir ils feuillettent les catalogues Ikea et Castorama, ils font des calculs, des projets, parlent vacances et aménagements. Ils sont d’accord sur tout” [P195]

The love between Anouk and Bernard

During Anouk’s depression, Bernard supports her: “he has … a sick wife that he looks after very well” [P95]. When Lou accuses Anouk of not loving her anymore, Bernard leaps to his wife’s defence: “she loves you with all her heart, she no longer knows how to show it”. Bernard’s patience and positivity pay off because as the story unfolds, his wife starts to get better and their relationship is rekindled: “In the evening they flick through the Ikea and Castorama catalogues, they do sums, make plans, talk about holidays and home improvements. They agree about everything”.

5             L’amour naissant entre Lou et Lucas

Dès le tout début du récit, il y a une attirance mutuelle entre Lou et Lucas. À la deuxième page, Lucas lui sourit et Lou remarque ses beaux yeux : « Ses yeux sont immenses, je pourrais me noyer à l’intérieur » [P12]. L’attraction entre eux se développe au cours de l’histoire. Lucas la surnomme affectueusement « Pépite » [P38], il l’invite à son appartement [P79] et plus tard à la patinoire [P99]. Lou s’imagine en train de l’embrasser « Quand on embrasse, dans quel sens faut-il tourner la langue ? » [P79]. S’occuper de No les réunit and finalement à la fin du livre, ils s’embrassent [P250]. Comme le titre du livre « No et moi » laisse entendre, l’intrigue principale suit l’évolution des rapports entre Lou et No mais l’amour naissant entre Lucas et Lou est une des intrigues secondaires.

The budding romance between Lou and Lucas

From the very start of the story, there is a mutual attraction between Lou and Lucas. On the second page, Lucas smiles at her and Lou notices his nice eyes: “His eyes are huge, I could drown in them”. The attraction between them develops as the story unfolds. Lucas affectionately nicknames her “Pépite”, invites her to his apartment and later to the ice-rink. Lou imagines herself kissing him: “When you kiss, in which direction should you roll your tongue?”. Looking after No brings them together and finally, at the end of the book, they kiss. As the title of the book “No and me” indicates, the main plot follows the development of the relationship between Lou and No but the budding romance between Lucas and Lou is one of the sub-plots.

6             Les opposés s’attirent ?

On dit que les opposés s’attirent. Lou manque de confiance en elle et d’aptitudes sociales tandis que Lucas est très sûr de lui et sociable, des qualités que Lou semble apprécier. Lou est plus petite et plus jeune que les autres élèves dans la classe et elle est attirée par Lucas qui est le plus âgé et le plus grand. Lucas est un élève sous-performant qui se comporte mal en classe alors que Lou est timide et intellectuellement précoce [P122]. Elle résume très bien les différences entre eux quand elle dit : « Il est le roi, l’insolent, le rebelle, je suis la première de la classe, docile et silencieuse. Il est le plus âgé et je suis la plus jeune, il est le plus grand et je suis minuscule » [P122]. De sa part, Lucas a l’air d’être attiré par Lou dès le tout début du roman et quoique le lecteur ne soit pas au courant de ses pensées, ses paroles laissent entendre qu’il admire Lou pour son intelligence. Quand elle lui explique ses raisons pour aider No, il répond : « T’es toute petite et t’es toute grande, Pépite… » [P121]. Autrement dit, il trouve qu’elle est peut-être petite physiquement mais son raisonnement est exceptionnellement astucieux.

Bien que Lucas et Lou soient très différents l’un de l’autre à certains égards, ils ont aussi des points en commun. Ils se sentent tous les deux rejetés par leurs mères et il est possible que ce soit une des raisons pour leur attirance mutuelle. Dans une certaine mesure, Lucas partage l’idéalisme de Lou et il est prêt à aider No en la cachant dans son appartement. Sans doute que ce projet commun les réunit.

Opposites attract?

They say that opposites attract. Lou lacks confidence and social skills whilst Lucas is very confident and sociable, attributes that Lou seems to value.  Lou is smaller and younger than the other students in the class and she is attracted by Lucas who is the oldest and the tallest. Lucas is an academic under-achiever who behaves badly in class whilst Lou is shy and academically exceptionally able. She encapsulates the differences between them very well when she says: “He is the king, the insolent one, the rebel, I am top of the class, compliant and quiet. He is the oldest and I am the youngest, he is the tallest and I am the tiniest”. For his part, Lucas seems to be attracted to Lou from the very beginning of the novel and although the reader is not privy to Lucas’s thoughts, his words suggest that he admires Lou for her intelligence. When she explains her reasons for helping No, he says “You’re really small and at the same time immense, Pépite…”. In other words, he finds that she may be physically small but her reasoning is exceptionally clever.

Although Lucas and Lou are very different from one another in some ways, they also have points in common. They both feel rejected by their mothers and it is possible that this is one of the reasons for their mutual attraction. To a certain extent Lucas shares Lou’s idealism and he is prepared to help No by hiding her in his apartment. No doubt this common project brings them together.

7             No et Loïc

No raconte que quand elle était à l’internat, elle est tombée amoureuse d’un garçon appelé Loïc [P104]. Elle prétend que Loïc travaille dans un pub en Irlande, qu’il lui écrit et qu’il lui a envoyé des photos d’une maison qu’il aimerait acheter où ils pourraient habiter ensemble. Elle espère que quand elle aura assez d’argent, elle ira le rejoindre en Irlande [P138]. Cependant, Lou apprend d’une ancienne amie de No, Geneviève, que Loïc est parti en Irlande en promettant d’écrire mais ne l’a jamais fait [P247]. Geneviève et No ont appris par un éducateur qu’il travaille dans un pub à Wexford. No semble avoir exagéré et idéalisé ses relations avec Loïc. À la fin du livre, Lucas embrasse Lou et cette note romantique et optimiste contraste avec le vide dans la vie de No. Une fin heureuse pour No aurait été un cliché romantique et Delphine de Vigan a préféré donner une fin réaliste à son histoire ce qui souligne la vie dure des sans-abris.

No and Loïc

No says that when she was in the boarding facility, she fell in love with a boy called Loïc. She claims that Loïc is living in Ireland, that he writes to her and that he has sent her photos of a house he would like to buy where they could live together. She hopes that when she has enough money, she will go and join him in Ireland. However, Lou learns from an old friend of Lou’s, Geneviève, that Loïc went to Ireland promising to write but never did. Geneviève and No found out from a youth worker that he is working in a bar in Wexford. No seems to have exaggerated and idealised her relationship with Loïc. Lucas kisses Lou at the end of the book and this romantic, optimistic note contrasts with the emptiness in No’s life. A happy ending for No would have been a romantic cliché and Delphine de Vigan preferred to give a realistic ending to her story which emphasises the bleak life of the homeless.

8             Aimer son prochain

Lou s’inquiète pour les gens en difficulté, notamment les sans-abris. Elle trouve inadmissible que nous soyons capables « d’envoyer des avions supersoniques et des fusées dans l’espace » [P82] mais aussi « de laisser mourir des gens dans la rue » [P82] et elle est choquée quand elle voit les campements des sans-abris au bord du périphérique [P178]. Elle aide No en partie parce que c’est son amie mais aussi parce qu’elle pense qu’il faut aider les gens en difficulté : « si chacun décidait de s’occuper d’une personne, une seule, de l’aider » [P81].

D’ailleurs, Lou est prête à défendre ceux qui sont maltraités. Quand sa tante Sylvie critique sa mère en public, Lou dit « Moi je n’aime pas qu’on s’attaque à des gens sans défense » [P84] et elle fait un commentaire cassant à Sylvie pour défendre sa mère. Elle n’accepte pas non plus que Monsieur Marin humilie Axelle Vernoux rien que parce qu’elle s’est fait couper les cheveux : « Moi, je n’aime pas qu’on humilie les gens, comme ça, gratuitement, sans raison. » [P127].

Love thy neighbour

Lou is concerned about those in difficulty, especially the homeless. She finds it unacceptable that we are capable of “sending supersonic planes and rockets into space” but also of “allowing people on the street to die” and she is shocked when she sees the camps of homeless people by the périphérque (the Paris ring road). She helps No partly because she is her friend but also because she believes that we should help those in difficulty: “if we all decided to look after one person each, just one person, to help them”.

Additionally, Lou is prepared to defend those who are mistreated. When tante Sylvie criticises her mother in public, Lou says: “Personally, I don’t like attacks on defenceless people” and she makes a cutting comment to Sylvie to defend her mother. She doesn’t accept Monsieur Marin’s humiliation of Axelle Vernoux either, just because she has had her hair cut: “Personally, I don’t like it when people are humiliated, like that, for no reason”.

9             L’amitié entre Lou et No

Peut-on appeler l’amitié entre Lou et No de l’amour ? C’est discutable. Cependant, Lou est prête à aider No “jusqu’au bout” quand elle est en difficulté. Elle est même prête à partir en Irlande avec elle à la recherche d’une nouvelle vie.

The friendship between Lou and No

Can we call the friendship between Lou and No love? This is a moot point. However, Lou is prepared to help No “to the very end” when she is in difficulty. She is even prepared to go with her to Ireland in search of a new life.

10           La prostitution

Le fait que No se prostitue souligne le fossé entre le monde de No et celui de Lou. Cela contraste vivement avec l’innocence de l’amour naissant entre Lou et Lucas.

Prostitution

The fact that No is being paid for sex emphasises the gulph between her world and Lou’s. It provides a stark contrast with the innocence of the budding romance between Lou and Lucas.
